The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folasade Ogunsola, has been appointed as the acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
Prof Ogunsola was elevated to the position by the university senate, becoming the first female to occupy the exalted post in the school’s history.
The professor of medical microbiology defeated her opponent and a deputy vice-chancellor in charge of management services, Professor Ben Oghojafor, to clinch the seat.
At a poll conducted by the senate, the first female provost of the university’s college of medicine in Idi-Araba, Mushin, raked 135 votes, higher than her rivals’ 31 votes.
The position became vacate after President Muhammadu Buhari asked the embattled VC, Prof Toyin Ogundipe, and the Pro-Chancellor of the school, Mr Wale Babalakin, to step aside after he ordered an investigation into the crisis rocking the higher institution.
Before her appointment, Prof Ogunsola was the DVC in charge of development services. She is the daughter of Nigeria’s first professor of Geography, Mr Akin Mabogunje.
