The federal government has suspended indefinitely the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension of the platform in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday.
The message, signed by Mr Segun Adeyemi, the Special Assistant to the President (Media), Office of the Minister of Information and Culture, cited that the country was placing a ban due to the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.
The Minister said the federal government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
This is coming days after the Minister called a press conference after the social media site took down President Muhammadu Buhari tweet and video believed to be threatening to clamp down on elements endangering the unity and cohesion of the country.
