Drama ensued on Monday as members of the Nigeria Police Force fired shots and teargas within the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex on Monday amid plans by some lawmakers to begin an impeachment process of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly, Mr Martin Amaewhule, presided over the sitting and resolved to begin the process.
The lawmakers also suspended the leader of the House, Mr Edison Ehie, and some of their colleagues believed to be loyal to the Governor, with 24 members of the assembly signing the removal of Mr Ehie and others.
Recall that there was an explosion at the assembly complex on Sunday night as the chamber was razed. Mr Ehie has been accused of supervising the burning of the complex to halt the eviction.
Lawmakers immediately after the sitting were seen at about 8:15 am driving out of the Assembly with heavy security escorts.
Following the gunshot and firing of teargas, people ran helter-skelter as policemen chased people, including workers whose offices are located within the area.
The embattled Governor also stormed the parliament this morning and videos showed the police shooting teargas and spraying him with water canons.
As of press time, a protest has broken out outside the complex with supporters of the Governor resisting his planned impeachment.
