The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Tanko Muhammad, has resigned from office after about a week 14 justices of the Supreme Court wrote a protest letter to him concerning the way he has been running the affairs of the apex court.
According to reports on Monday, Mr Muhammad cited ill-health for his action.
The legal practitioner assumed office nearly three years ago after his predecessor, Justice Walter Onnoghen, was unceremoniously removed from office over allegations bordering on the declaration of assets.
It was gathered that the next most senior justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, would soon be sworn-in as the acting CJN.
Mr Muhammad, 68, was born in the Doguwa-Giade local government area of Bauchi State and obtained an LL.B degree in Islamic Law in 1980 from Ahmadu Bello University. Five years later, he bagged an LL.M. degree from the school and in 1998, he received a PhD in law from the same university.
He was appointed to the bench of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2006 but was sworn in on January 7, 2007, and on Thursday, July 11, 2019, Mr Muhammed was nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari as substantive CJN barely 24 hours after he was recommended to the President by the National Judicial Council (NJC).
