The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained why it arrested an Abuja-based blogger, Mr Abubakar Sidiq Usman, on Monday.

In the early hours of Monday, August 8, 2016, operatives of the EFCC apprehended Mr Usman at his residence in Kubwa, Abuja.

The arrest of the top blogger in Nigeria sparked reactions and criticisms from his fellow bloggers, who launched a Twitter campaign calling for his immediate release.

They accused the anti-graft agency of trying to tame the media in Nigeria.

It was alleged that Mr Usam, who is the publisher of www.abusidiqu.com, wrote a story about the EFCC, which some bloggers felt offended the agency, but wonder why the police was not called to do their job.

But in a statement by the EFCC on its website on Monday, it explained that Mr Usman was apprehended for an alleged offence “bordering on cyber stalking.”

The EFCC said it questioned Mr Usman “over the alleged offence which contravenes sections of the Cyber Crime Act.”

It said “the suspect has already been offered administrative bail and would be released to his elected sureties.”
