The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has disclosed that the excessive heat wave being experienced across the country presently could persist for a while.
In a short post on its X page, the official source for weather and climate news stated the implications of the weather and advised the public on how to manage the situation.
“Air temperatures hit 41°C over the North and 39°C over the South with model projections indicating temperatures to remain high in the coming days,” NiMET said.
Providing health implications and advisories, the weather agency said the high temperature could trigger dehydration which could also cause fainting.
It warned that Nigerians were prone to other skin-related diseases like Chicken Pox, Measles, and Heat Rash.
In addition, it said it could lead to weakness of the body, slight fever, and dry lips; as well as heat-related illnesses, respiratory issues, and increased vulnerability to chronic conditions.
It advised that Nigerians should have “adequate fluid intake, seek shade, use fans, and wear light, breathable clothing to reduce exposure to high temperatures, and avoid strenuous physical activity during peak heat hours (stay indoors as much as possible between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm evening time.”
