Intending tenants have been advised to always ensure they request from landlords or caretakers of outstanding bills of the apartments they want to pay for.
This appeal was made by Ikeja Electric.
Explaining the reason for the advice, the company it followed the high spate of customers “inheriting” accumulated electricity bills when they rent/lease apartments and offices spaces.
It then advised its customers to make all necessary enquiries before signing tenancy agreements with landlords or caretakers, for any apartment, building or facility.
Ikeja Electric said it has become worrisome to it the increasing cases where customers have unknowingly moved into apartments or office spaces where the previous tenant had not been paying electricity bills, leaving them stranded when IE exercised its right to disconnect defaulters.
“It is therefore in the best interest of would be tenants to ensure that electricity bills and related issues are discussed and resolved BEFORE making payments and moving in,” the electricity firm said, maintaining that it “reserves the right to disconnect premises with long outstanding payments.”
