Nigeria’s largest electricity distribution company, Ikeja Electric Plc (IKEDC), has said the consumption of electricity is not free.
This Disco made this known in a notice circulated through its Twitter account on Monday afternoon in reaction to reports that operators have been asked by government to suspend payment of energy bills for a two-month period.
It stated that discussions about waiving payment of electricity bills for two months between the executive and legislative arms of government were ongoing.
“The Management of Ikeja Electric Plc wishes to state that it fully supports the ongoing efforts of the National Assembly, in collaboration with the Federal Government, to consider a proposal on the possibility of providing free electricity for two months as part of Covid-19 palliatives for customers.
“However, it is important to point out that at the moment, it is only a proposal and it is undergoing stakeholder review on its feasibility. It has not been approved by the government as a stimulus package or palliative,” the power distribution firm said.
IKEDC further noted that the ability of the Disco to implement this proposed palliative was subject to the stimulus package being passed by the National Assembly and requiring the assent of the president to be passed into law.
It then called on its customers to continue to pay their utility bills, and promised to ramp up its services to serve its customers during this period.
