Lagos Shuts Down Alade Market for Flouting Environmental Laws

The Lagos State Government has announced the closure of a popular market located at Onigbongbo Local Council Area of Ikeja, Alade Market.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, ordered the closure of the market due to its users flouting environmental laws following a series of abatement notices.

The Director of Public Affairs in the Ministry, Mr Kunle Adeshina, confirmed the closure of the facility in a statement on Wednesday, stressing that the market would not be reopened until specified conditions are met.

He said, “As directed by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, enforcement operatives from LAWMA and KAI/ LAGESC in a joint operation on Wednesday morning sealed Alade Market situated in Onigbongbo LCDA.”

Mr Adeshina noted that the enforcement was carried out by the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) Officials, in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) and Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI).

Business Post reports that the Lagos State Government actively engaged in the closure of several markets in the state over environmental cases.

Markets affected by this closure are Mile-12, Alaba market, Ilepo market, Oyingbo, and others Last month.

Some of the Markets were shut down due to their unhygienic environment and their users’ refusal to pay for waste services alongside poor waste management.

Recall that, the Lagos State government shut down the Ladipo market over environmental issues last month, this same action took place in 2021.

The place was closed by the state government and last year, the government threatened to take a similar action for the same reason.

Ladipo Market is located in the Mushin area of Lagos.
