The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed that one person lost his life on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, after a storey building collapsed in the Aromire area of Ikeja, Lagos.

In a statement on Thursday, the agency said the property caved in during an ongoing construction carried out by “some unskilled labours on site.”

LASEMA, which did not disclose the actual identity of the fatal casualty, stated that an adult male believed to be a welder working on the construction site lost his life.

It was stated that the property, located at 12 Aromire Street, Ikeja, Lagos, was formerly occupied by KILMS Mart.

The emergency firm disclosed that it got to the scene of the incident after it received calls from residents of the area and quickly activated its emergency response plan.

“The agency swiftly responded to the emergency call immediately it was escalated and activated its emergency response plan by deploying its responders to take full control of the situation.

“Unfortunately, an adult male reported to be a welder lost his life instantly at the scene. His remains were recovered and removed from the scene,” the statement quoted the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Mr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, as saying.

He added that the post-disaster assessment conducted by the team indicates that the building does not pose any threat to adjoining buildings.

“The building was cordoned off, and Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and Nigeria Police were contacted for further action,” the statement disclosed.
