Nigeria, Korea to Develop Maritime Security Scheme

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Nigeria and the Republic of Korea to develop, coordinate and monitor the implementation of a maritime security and safety scheme.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday between the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Korean Coast Guard.

At the signing ceremony, the Director-General of NIMASA, Mr Bashir Jamoh, said this development will further provide security to the Gulf of Guinea.

He described the cooperation between his agency and the Korean Coast Guard as a welcome development, emphasising that the MoU will be implemented to the best interest of both countries.

“The relationship between Nigeria and Korean spans over many decades and this MoU, which started with a statement of intent in 2018, is designed to reinforce the commitment of both countries to grow bilateral trade through maritime,” the NIMASA chief said.

Commenting on the emergence of Nigeria’s Dr Paul Adalikwu as the newly elected Secretary-General of the Maritime Organization for West and Central Africa (MOWCA), Mr Jamoh said that it was another testimony of the trust the international community now bestow on Nigeria’s leadership role in the African maritime sector.

On his part, the Director-General of the International Affairs and Intelligence Bureau, Korean Coast Guard, Mr Seonggi Kang, praised NIMASA for the deal, assuring that his country will do its best to achieve the aim.
