Nigerians have been warned by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about the fake news on the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).

Yesterday, the commission urged Nigerians to ignore the false news making the rounds that it would resume its CVR on Monday.

According to the flyer on its social media page titled “Fake News Alert”, no date has been fixed for the registration as claimed in the false report.

“INEC wishes to inform the general public that no date has been fixed for the resumption of the CVR.

“We implore Nigerians to ignore the fake news making the rounds that the commission will open the register of voters from Jan. 25,” the flyer said.

The commission suspended the exercise before the 2019 general elections.

Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, when he assumed office for his second tenure in December 2020, said the resumption of the CVR across the country would be in the first quarter of 2021.

The exercise, when commenced, is expected to continue until six months before the 2023 general elections.

Meanwhile, some Nigerians have started to react to the fake news.

@Kingsijeh said, “Please tell Nigerians when @inecnigeria will reopen the voters registration. This must be a continuous process. People turn 18 years every day, new eligible voters should be able to register seamlessly. If not you are aiding and abetting voter suppression and disenfranchisement.”

“Covid is not fatigued, the government cannot provide enough vaccines in time and 2023 is sacrosanct. Use technology and get people registered,” @ShadeOsijo tweeted.
