The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) said it had paid about N6.647 billion to 5,907 pensioners of the defunct Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL)/mTel.
In a statement issued by the agency on Thursday, it was disclosed that the payment was for 15 months of inherited unfunded pension liabilities for NITEL pensioners.
It was stated that the Executive Secretary of PTAD, Ms Chioma Ejikeme, confirmed the payment during her presentation at the 58th session of the State House Briefing.
At the event, she said the organisation had recorded giant strides in pension service delivery in Nigeria, assuring that the directorate will not rest on its oars.
In her chat with newsmen in Abuja yesterday, Ms Ejikeme revealed that the payment for the 15 months was part of the outstanding 63 months of the inherited unfunded pension liabilities.
According to her, the settlement of the 15 months was part of President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment to continue to clear the backlog of inherited pension liabilities.
She gave the assurance that additional funding of N5.745 billion expected from the budget of the federation would be used to pay 15 months of inherited unfunded pension arrears to the second and final batch of 5,238 NITEL/Mtel pensioners.
