President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Senate to confirm the appointment of his Special Assistant on Social Media, Ms Lauretta Onochie, as a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
A letter to the Senate by the President on Tuesday disclosed that Ms Onochie, upon her confirmation by the upper chamber of the country’s parliament, will represent Delta State.
The letter was read by the President of the Senate, Mr Ahmad Lawan, on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, October 13, informing his collegues of the development.
Mr Lawan, while reading the note from Mr Buhari, disclosed that Ms Onochie is not the only person nominated for the electoral umpire job as there were three others.
The number three citizen of the country named the other nominees sent to the parliament for screening and confirmation as Mr Mohammed Sani (Katsina), Mr Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti), and Mr Seidu Ahmed (Jigawa).
According to the Senate President, Mr Buhari explained in his letter that the nomination of the four persons was pursuant to Paragraph 14 of part 1F of the First Schedule of the 1999 Constitution.
Ms Onochie is one of the most vocal aides of President Buhari on social media and this has made her draw several criticisms to herself because of her views.
Last week, she incurred the wrath of a popular musician, Wizkid, after she described the singer as a ‘dumbkid’ for addressing her boss as an old man.
