Lagos Records Production of 234 Films in Q2 2021

Lagos State recorded the highest number of Nollywood movie production in Nigeria in the second quarter of the year with a total of 234 films.

This was obtained from the latest publication of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Nollywood Movies Production Data (Q2 2021) provided by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB).

In the data, the number of movies produced in the country within the period under review increased to 635 from the 416 recorded in the first quarter of the year, indicating a quarter-on-quarter growth of 53.9 per cent and year-on-year growth of 1.4 per cent when compared with the 626 movies churned out in Q2 2020.

The stats office further said Lagos accounted for 36.8 per cent with 234 flicks and when compared with the figures of the first three months of this year, it increased by 57 per cent.

It was stated that in Q1 2021, the state, which is the commercial capital of Nigeria, witnessed the production of 149 Nollywood movies.

In the second quarter of 2021, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja trailed Lagos with a total of 196 movies produced, 83 per cent higher than the 107 film productions it reported in Q1 2020.

Meanwhile, Benin City (Edo State) and Port-Harcourt (Rivers State) recorded the lowest contribution to the total Nollywood movie production for the quarter under review as they produced 7 movies each.

The Nigerian film industry is the largest in Africa in terms of value, the number of annual films, revenue, and popularity.

It is also the second-largest film producer globally, behind the United States’ Hollywood and ahead of India’s Bollywood.

While the movie industry value chain was adversely affected by the pandemic, the continual growth and exposure of the industry are partly and apparently drawing from the development of cinemas and multiple distribution platforms like Netflix to aid private consumption.
