Jose Mourinho has been sacked by English football outfit, Manchester United, ending his nearly three-year reign at Old Trafford.

This development comes after United suffered a shocking 3-1 defeat to their fiercest rival, Liverpool, on Sunday evening at Anfield.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Red Devils confirmed the exit of the 55-year-old Portuguese, who led the club to a League Cup and a Europa League title.

With the firing of Mr Mourinho as United boss, his assistant and former captain of the team, Michael Carrick, has been appointed as the caretaker-manager.

“A caretaker-manager will be appointed until the end of the season while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager,” the statement said.

“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future,” it said further.

Manchester United are sixth on the Premier League table with 26 points garnered from 17 games. They are 19 points behind the league leaders, Liverpool, and 11 points from Chelsea, which occupy the fourth position on the log. Since the exit of Sir Alex Ferguson, United have not been able to get back to their best. Mourinho is the third manager of the team since the exit of Ferguson. David Moyes first managed the team in the first post-Ferguson era. Louis van Gaal was the second and Mourinho the third.
