The Italian Serie A has announced its intension to resume competition on June 13, with Italy’s top-flight clubs set to return to group training from Monday, May 18.
Like most of the leagues in Europe, the Serie A halted the 2019/2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic, but with the country emerging from the lockdown caused by Coronavirus disease, which has caused over 30,000 deaths in the country, football’s return is now set for next month.
Clubs voted to make a return from June 13, though the date still requires an approval from the Italian government.
A statement from Serie A confirmed that, “Regarding the resumption of sporting activity, the date of June 13 for the resumption of the championship was indicated, in accordance with government decisions and in accordance with the medical protocols for the protection of players and all professionals.”
Clubs will be permitted to resume contact training from Monday, but a new medical protocol is in place which means that even if one club employee tests positive for COVID-19, the entire club will have be quarantined for 15 days.
The English Premier League is currently working on plans to return under the banner of Project Restart, while the German Bundesliga is set to make a return this weekend.
Meanwhile, the Dutch and French football leagues have ended theirs with the former cancelling the season, but now faces lawsuit due to the problems that have ensued.
The latter, on its part, announced a winner, but it is also having issues from unsatisfied clubs, which kicked against the move by the league governing body.
