A collaboration designed to celebrate skateboarding culture in Nigeria has been entered into between Spotify and Dencity, a pioneering, female-led collective that empowers women and underrepresented groups in the country’s skateboarding scene.

The partnership between both parties has led to the special takeover of the audio streaming platform’s popular Skate Noise playlist.

Spotify’s Skate Noise, a global event series that blends the raw energy of skateboarding with the pulsating rhythms of live music, is set to make waves in Lagos, Nigeria.

This innovative platform will celebrate the dynamic and culturally savvy Nigerian Gen Z community, uniting skaters and music enthusiasts in a vibrant celebration of creativity and urban culture.

A statement from the entertainment outfit said the partnership with Dencity would create an opportunity for Skate Noise to redefine skateboarding as a sport for female enthusiasts in Nigeria, showcasing the diversity and potential within this often-overlooked demographic, inspiring a new generation of female skaters, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Dencity, a post-lockdown initiative aimed at connecting with female skaters in Lagos, has grown into a nationwide movement, championing diversity within Nigeria’s skateboarding scene.

The collective is committed to pushing the boundaries of what it means to be a skater in Nigeria by empowering female skaters, encouraging more women to participate in the sport, and fostering an inclusive, welcoming environment for all.

This playlist takeover marks a significant step in showcasing the transformative power of skateboarding as a form of self-expression.

It highlights the incredible talent of Nigerian skaters and underscores the deep, often underrepresented, connection between music and skateboarding. Beyond the Skate Noise playlist takeover, Dencity will also be collaborating with Spotify as an official merch partner for the Skate Noise event.

From setting the soundtrack to iconic skating moments to accompanying riders as they carve up the streets, music is as integral to skateboarding as any other element of the culture.

This collaboration with Dencity reflects Spotify’s commitment to supporting diverse voices and celebrating the unique fusion of music and skateboarding in Nigeria.

Commenting on the development, the Head of Music at Spotify Sub-Saharan Africa, Ms Phiona Okumu, said, “Music has always been a powerful tool for connection, and Spotify recognises the profound link between music and skateboarding.

“Both are forms of expression that thrive on creativity and individuality.

“We’re proud to support the skateboarding community by providing a platform where skaters can discover, share, and amplify the music that fuels their passion,” she added.

Also, Dencity collective said, “Our mission is straightforward. We aim to amplify our community’s talent, strengthen the Nigerian skateboarding scene, and encourage more women to get involved. We’re more than just skaters; we’re creatives pushing boundaries in everything we do.”
