The House of Representatives has given a two-day ultimatum to the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, to come and explain the new policy of cash withdrawal limits.
This is as the apex bank governor snubbed two invitations sent to him by the lower chamber of the National Assembly to appear before it.
At the plenary on Tuesday, the lawmakers received a letter from Mr Emefiele, explaining why he could not appear during plenary.
In his latest letter to the House, the CBN chief stated that he was regrettably unavailable because he had other official engagements.
The Speaker of the House, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, said the House should resolve to invite the CBN Governor to brief them on the cash withdrawal limits on Thursday, December 22, or invite his deputy to do that in his stead.
“The earlier date is today, at 10 a.m. And just yesterday, the clerk received a letter where it was stated that the Governor was regrettably unavailable because he has other official engagements,” he said.
Mr Gbajabiamila pointed out that said it was important for the green chamber of the parliament to get a proper briefing based on the law.
Adding his voice, the Minority Leader, Mr Ndudi Elumelu, however, stated that if the CBN governor fails to show up before the House on Thursday when the lawmakers have scheduled to go on Christmas and New Year break, their resolution on suspension of the policy still stands.
Last week, the CBN governor was scheduled to appear before the lawmakers but gave an excuse that he was to accompany President Muhammadu Buhari to the US-Africa Summit at the request of President Joe Biden.
