To promote reading culture among children, an investment company, VFD Group Plc, has donated copies of a new book by an award-winning Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Mama’s Sleeping Scarf, to some students of Kesham International School.
The books, the first written for children by the author, were given to the students and others at the unveiling of the literary work by the respected global writer in Lagos on Friday, December 29, 2023.
The launch of the book was anchored by a media personality, Kunle Kasumu, and had in attendance a former President of Nigeria, Mr Olusegun Obasanjo; a former Minister of Education, Mrs Obiageli Ezekwesili; the former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi; a Senior Lecturer at the Harvard Business School, Mr Hakeem Belo-Osagie; and a Nigerian business executive, Mrs Bella Disu, among others.
The Executive Director of VFD Group, Mr Adeniyi Adenubi, and the Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications of the firm, Mr Muyiwa Olowoporoku, while presenting the books to the beneficiaries, said the initiative was in line with the organisation’s commitment to corporate social responsibility.
They said VFD Group partnered with the Narrative Landscape Press and GLG Communications to host because it was determined to revive the declining reading culture among Nigerian students.
They noted that the collaboration focused on promoting the love for reading and supporting education, reflecting VFD Group’s dedication to social impact.
This was why the company facilitated the attendance of a hundred children from less privileged schools, providing them with an opportunity to participate in engaging activities and a special book reading session with Chimamanda.
In a heartfelt address, Mr Adenubi underscored the importance of Chimamanda’s literacy advocacy and shared personal stories of reading to his child, emphasizing the profound impact on their bond.
In her address, Chimamanda highlighted the crucial role of good grammar and reading in personal development.
The unveiling, themed Christmas Magic with Chimamanda also had a Q&A session with the author, who provided insightful answers, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees.
