The popular fruit market in Lagos, Mile 12 Market, has been reopened by the Lagos State Government after it was shut down last week.

The market was sealed by the state government over the poor hygiene and untidy environment in the vicinity.

Recall that on Friday, October 13, 2023, the government closed the market, but on Sunday, it was reopened by the General Manager of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Mr Muyiwa Gbadegesin.

The LAWMA chief reopened the Mile 12 Market on the directive of the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab.

The Commissioner said this was after a comprehensive assessment of environmental compliance, waste management practices, and overall cleanliness within the market.

Mr Wahad warned that the government would not condone any dirtiness in the market and threatened to close it down if they did not abide by the law that has been made.

“We must stop being careless about our environment. Our treatment of the environment reflects how the environment treats us. We cannot sit back and allow the negligence of a few to negatively impact the majority of people,” Mr Wahab stated.

“Despite extensive advocacy and public awareness efforts, the government has been left with no choice but to enforce the regulations. This enforcement will be an ongoing process, as no government takes pleasure in closing down markets,” he noted.

The Commissioner urged traders to adhere to acceptable standards, placing great importance on hygiene for their own well-being and that of the public, stressing that the government will not hesitate to close down any market that reverts to unsanitary conditions.
