Multiple reports say some heavily armed policemen in Imo State have arrested the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Joe Ajaero.
The labour leader was allegedly apprehended by the police in Owerri, the state capital, on Wednesday during a protest over the salaries of workers.
According to reports, Mr Ajaero was nabbed at the union’s secretariat in the state and driven to an unknown destination.
The NLC leader and the state government led by Mr Hope Uzodinma have been at loggerheads for a while.
Meanwhile, the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have vehemently kicked against the arrest of Mr Ajaero in Imo State, accusing the Governor of intimidation.
In a statement jointly signed by the General Secretary of the NLC, Mr Emmanuel Ugboaja, and the Secretary-General of the TUC, Mr Nuhu Toro, the unions called on the “police to immediately release the president of the congress without further delay.
They claimed Mr Uzodinma has continued to use the instrument of violence and intimidation against trade unions and their leadership in the state.
