Rice Smuggling: FG to Investigate Nigerian Breweries

A committee has been set up Federal Government to critically look into the use of trucks belonging to Nigerian Breweries Plc to smuggle rice and other contraband items into the country.

Area Controller of the Nigeria Customers Service (NCS) in Lagos, Mr Mohammed Uba, told reporters that the issue was becoming worrisome.

He said to carry out a thorough job, the high-powered investigation team will meet with the management of the brewery giant to get to the root of the matter.

According to him, “You cannot do an investigation without listening to the other party. What type of investigation are you doing?”

It was disclosed during the natter with newsmen that in recent times, lorries carrying the company’s products have been caught transporting and importing prohibited goods in the country.

Two months ago, a lorry belonging to Nigerian Breweries was apprehended with over 270 bags of foreign rice concealed among some empty crates of its alcoholic beverage products.

This month, another 170 bags of rice were concealed in Nigerian Breweries lorry thus prompting this investigation to unravel out the extent of the company’s involvement in the crime.
