WhatsApp, the messaging platform, has finally restored its operation after going down in Nigeria and around the world for more than an hour.
The app suffered a network glitch, forcing many users, including Nigerians, to rush to Facebook and Twitter to complain over their inability to send or receive messages on the popular Meta-owned platform.
After opening the app, users found that while they could still access their conversations, they were not receiving new messages or able to send any. A persistent message was showing for many users at the top of the app saying it was “connecting” to the server, but it then fails to do so.
According to the service status website Downdetector, users began reporting problems with WhatsApp at just before 8 a.m. on Tuesday, with more than 12,000 reports to the website by 8.30 a.m.
WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging platforms in Nigeria, Africa and around the world and is estimated to have more than 2 billion active users globally.
Last year, the service was down for more than six hours.
Acknowledging the issue, a Meta spokesperson said the company is working to restore services “as quickly as possible.”
“We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages, and we’re working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible,” the spokesperson said.
But some minutes past 10 am, the issue was resolved and users are able to use the application.
