Ms Obiageli Ugboma has been appointed as the new Chief Risk and Compliance Officer of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, a statement from the leading telco has said.

In the notice signed by the Company Secretary, Uto Ukpanah, it was disclosed that the appointment is effective Monday, November 7, 2022.

The board of MTN Nigeria has expressed its confidence in Ms Ugbona, noting that “the company will benefit from her extensive leadership experience and deep understanding of risk, compliance and internal control.”

The seat became vacant earlier this year when MTN Nigeria, in a disclosure dated April 20, said Mr Cyril Ilok was no longer its Chief Risk and Compliance Officer.

Mr Ilok resigned from his appointment following reports linking him with a senior employee of the company accused of using his position to harass women in the organisation.

“We wish to notify the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) Limited and the investing public of the appointment of Ms Obiageli Ugboma to succeed Mr Cyril Ilok as the Chief Risk and Compliance Officer of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc effective November 7, 2022,” the statement today said.

Ms Ugboma, a risk executive and business leader with over 20 years of experience in leading financial institutions in the UK and Nigeria, is said to have joined MTN Nigeria from FSDH Holding Company Limited, where she held a pivotal role in the evaluation and execution of corporate, business, and operational strategy as the Group’s Chief Risk Officer.

Prior to this, she served as the Chief Risk Officer and Managing Director, Risk and Compliance of Chapel Hill Denham, Nigeria, from 2011 to 2021.

She has worked internationally in senior positions, including at JP Morgan, where she was an executive director and head of EMEA Operational Risk, and at the Financial Services Authority (now FCA) and HSBC Bank Plc.

Ms Ugboma holds a BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology from Imperial College, London, and a BSc (Hons) in Financial Services from Alliance Manchester Business School. She is a certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM), a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (FCIB) and a Chartered Stockbroker (ACS).
