A leading cross-border payments company, WorldRemit, has joined others to celebrate the 2020 International Migrants Day held Saturday, December 19, 2020.

The company marked the day with the release of its top 20 Migrant Moments list, which featured developments that have had significant impacts on communities across the world.

WorldRemit explained that the purpose of compiling the list was to bring attention to all those who have managed to make a positive difference during this exceptionally year ravaged by COVID-19.

The organisation aims to support migrant communities as well as their family and friends every day, whilst celebrating their many successes throughout the year, and for many years to come.

The top 20 Migrant moments list for the year 2020 included the production of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, the election of Senator Kamala Harris as the Vice-President of the United States, the unveiling of Nigerian music star, Patoranking as the global brand ambassador of WorldRemit for its Africa-focused WorldRemit Entrepreneurs Program; the sponsoring of Nigeria’s Chinasa Mandy Ukandu and Colombia’s Luis Alejandro Castañeda to London in January 2020 to London to see Arsenal Football Club. The duo were winners of the WorldRemit Future Stars competition and they were in the England capital to take part in a personalised training program with Arsenal Football Club’s Development coaches.

Also making the top 20 list was Mr Adewale Adeyemo, who has been chosen to the team of US President-elect, Mr Joe Biden. Mr Adeyemo will join Mr Biden’s cabinet as the Deputy Treasury Secretary. He had served as a senior international economic adviser in the Barack Obama administration.

In addition, David Olusoga, a British-Nigerian historian and writer was included on the list for his response to the Black Lives Matter movement. His Black and British: A Forgotten History was broadcast on the BBC. The documentary was awarded a BAFTA when originally produced in 2016.

Earlier this year, WorldRemit gave out £400,000 worth of vouchers to NHS workers as a token of appreciation for their service and the sacrifices they are making throughout the pandemic.

As part of efforts to create opportunities for those in developing countries, the firm also gave out tablets to students in countries including India and Guatemala following the pandemic-related disruption to schooling.
