The disengaged employees of the United States oil company, Chevron Nigeria Limited Company, have been recalled by the management after the intervention of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
The oil and gas union had threatened to embark on an industrial action from yesterday following the sacking of the workers, who are their members.
Chevron had carried out a mass disengagement of its workforce, which NUPENG was not happy about because it affected its members. After it threatened a strike action, the trade organisation was pacified to embrace a dialogue and the proposed action was put on hold.
On Tuesday, the National Secretary of NUPENG, Mr Afolabi Olawale, confirmed to Punch that a truce has been reached by parties involved in the matter. According to him, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr Mele Kyari, intervened for peace to reign.
“A lot of progress has been made. First, we suspended the planned industrial action, based on the intervention of the GMD, NNPC, Mallam Mele Kyari. Meetings have been held with the management of the Chevron Nigeria. They sent a representative.
“I am happy to tell you that we have signed a new agreement which still consists of our earlier demands. It was due to the breach of the old agreement that warranted the signing of a new agreement.
“Our union members that were sacked have been asked to return to work. We thank the GMD, NNPC, for his intervention. He was quite instrumental to the success recorded in ending the NUPENG-CNL face-off,” the union’s scribe said.
