There is a blackout currently in Nigeria and the reason is that the national grid has collapsed again.

This was confirmed by one of the electricity distribution companies (DisCos) licenced to operate in the country, Kaduna Electric.

In a message to its customers on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, the management of the energy firm apologised for the power outage being experienced in its coverage areas, blaming it on the collapse in the national grid.

“We regret to inform you that the power outage currently being experienced across our franchise- Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states- is as a result of the collapse of the national grid. The collapse occurred at about 11:01 am this morning,” a part of the statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communication at Kaduna Electric, Mr Abdulazeez Abdullahi, said.

“Power supply shall be restored across our franchise as soon as the grid is restored by the Transmission Company of Nigeria team,” he assured.

“We sincerely apologise for all inconveniences being suffered,” Mr Abdullahi concluded.

This is not the first time the national grid is collapsing and it is also not the first time it is happening this year.

Most Nigerians are currently observing the public holidays declared by the federal government for Wednesday and Thursday to celebrate the end of the fast by Muslims.

However, they are observing the work-free days in darkness as it was last month when Christians celebrated Easter as a result of a decline in the capacity of the grid.

Nigeria, with a population of over 200 million, relies on about 5,000 megawatts of electricity despite spending trillions of Naira on power for the past years.
