The remote working policy put in place by a leading mobile network operator in the country, Airtel Nigeria, has been extended by two additional weeks.

The scheme, as part of the business continuity plan of the organisation, was initially announced few weeks ago in a bid to safeguard its employees from COVID-19 and help stem the spread of the virus.

In a memo to employees, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Nigeria, Mr Segun Ogunsanya, said members of staff of the company particularly in Lagos, Ogun State and FCT, the epicentres of the coronavirus infections in Nigeria, should continue to work from home till the end of May.

He commended them for their strict compliance to the prescribed safety and hygiene measures which has resulted in zero-infection in the company and prayed that God continues to protect them all and their loved ones.

However, he urged employees in other parts of the country to observe the nationwide 8pm to 6am curfew while adhering to whatever restrictions and laws obtainable in the various states of their operation.

The company’s chief also charged all the employees to take responsibility for their health and safety as well as that of their families and colleagues by maintaining social distancing, observing the prescribed hygiene protocols and wearing the appropriate masks whenever they are leaving their homes, if they must.

Meanwhile, some Airtel outlets are open across the country with reduced number of employees in compliance with government regulations.

Mr Ogunsanya tasked all the agents in the outlets to ensure contactless interactions whenever possible as they serve the customers.

He also urged customers to download the Airtel self-care app to avail themselves of a world of products, services and self-care in problem resolutions.

According to him, “we are mindful of the circumstances and are thankful all the company’s online platforms are working optimally with excellent resilience to withstand the pressure of contactless customer service.”

He assured customers that in spite of the challenges, the network was up and running without any major issues.

He thanked the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and Inspector General of Police (IGP) for providing security passes for the engineers to move about freely to ensure uninterrupted network availability.

Airtel Nigeria said it will review the situation at the end of the month to determine the next steps with regard to the resumption of work at the offices.
