Emefiele Still CBN Governor, Not Sacked by President--Source

A source at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has informed Business Post that Mr Godwin Emefiele has not been removed as Governor of the nation’s apex bank as being speculated on social media.

The source confided in our correspondent on Monday that the Delta State born banker has also not been asked by President Muhammadu Buhari to proceed on a terminal leave.

The tenure of the former Zenith Bank chief is expected to expire in June 2019, but can be extended by another five years if the President desires.

However, most of the past CBN Governors have served only one term of five years in office and Mr Emefiele is not likely to break that jinx.

“I can confirm to you that Godwin Emefiele is still the CBN Governor. He has not been removed from the position as being speculated on social media. So, please ignore the rumour,” the source told Business Post.

Mr Emefiele was appointed as CBN Governor in 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan after the suspension of the present Emir of Kano, Mr Sanusi Lamido.

He was left to continue in office when the administration of President Buhari took over in 2015.
